Just as the headlines around the recent Cyclospora outbreak began to fade, another food safety story took their place.

This time it was salmonella, linked to jalapeño peppers served at restaurant chains, including Chipotle and Qdoba.

Different ingredient. Different pathogen.

Same problem.

When foodborne illness outbreaks like these happen, most people focus on what made consumers sick. The people responsible for protecting our food supply are asking a very different question:

Can we trace it?

Where did that ingredient come from?

Who received it?

Which products did it end up in?

How quickly can we identify every location that may have been affected?

Those aren’t questions that matter only to regulators. They matter to every grocery retailer, restaurant, distributor and food manufacturer that may have handled that product somewhere along the supply chain.

Why Food Traceability Matters More Than Ever

When a food recall or foodborne illness outbreak is announced, every minute counts.

The longer it takes to trace an ingredient, the longer businesses spend trying to determine whether they’re affected. Teams scramble to pull together receiving logs, invoices and supplier records. Products stay in circulation longer than anyone wants. Customers, employees and suppliers are all waiting for answers.

Although the compliance deadline has been extended to 2028, food supply chains continue to grow more complex. Ingredients often move through multiple suppliers, distributors and locations before reaching consumers. At the same time, many major retailers and foodservice organizations are already asking suppliers to demonstrate stronger traceability capabilities rather than waiting for the regulatory deadline.

The expectation is no longer that businesses can eventually trace a product.
